Statement from President Ojakian on Guidance for Transgender Students

Today, the U.S. Departments of Education and Justice released a letter with joint guidance for schools receiving federal funding to ensure that all students, including transgender students, are free from discrimination.  In response, Mark E. Ojakian, President of the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities, made the following statement:

"We are fortunate to live in Connecticut - a state that has led the fight against all forms of discrimination and implements inclusive policies that welcome all members of society. Part of the unique value at CSCU is the diversity of our student population. I want to send a clear message to existing and future students that we do not tolerate discrimination at any level. I have been consistently vocal about our commitment to provide a safe learning environment that encourages and celebrates diversity and fosters a culture of inclusion. We are grateful for the U.S. Department of Education and Justice’s guidance as it falls in line with our policies, our history and our philosophy."

Background:

• Under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, schools receiving federal money may not discriminate based on a student’s sex, including a student’s transgender status.
• The guidance makes clear that both federal agencies treat a student’s gender identity as the student’s sex for purposes of enforcing Title IX.
